Are you a junior, senior, or graduate student interested in public sector real estate, land acquisition, or urban development? Join Metropolitan’s Planning and Acquisition Unit as a Student Intern and gain hands-on experience in Right-of-Way (ROW) acquisition, supporting major capital improvement projects that shape communities across Southern California.
Throughout this paid internship, you will learn how public agencies secure the land rights needed for infrastructure projects and gain practical training, professional mentorship, and meaningful project experience in public-sector real estate.
What You’ll Learn & Do
As a Student Intern, you’ll support real property activities related to capital improvement projects, including:
Assisting with land acquisition, appraisals, property dispositions, and related right-of-way real estate activities
Learning to prepare and review real estate documents such as agreements, permits, and deeds
Conducting research and studies related to real property and planning initiatives
Assisting with correspondence with property owners and internal departments
Compiling data from multiple sources and preparing reports and updates
Collecting, analyzing, and maintaining statistical and property-related records
Supporting professional real estate staff with special projects and ad hoc assignments
This role is designed to give you exposure to multiple right-of-way and real estate functions while building skills you can apply directly to your coursework and future career.

Work Schedule
Full-time during summer break and/or part-time (up to 18 hours per week) during the school year
Assignment length ranges from 3 to 12 months
Start and end dates are flexible and based on student availability and business needs
Pay Rate
$25.00/hour – Junior-level undergraduate
$27.23/hour – Senior-level undergraduate or graduate student
Employment Standards
Minimum Qualifications
Current enrollment in an accredited four-year college or university with junior or senior standing in a related major carrying a minimum of 12-semester units or 8-quarter units OR
Current enrollment in an accredited graduate degree program in a related major
Maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale
Desirable Qualifications
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Detail-oriented with good organizational skills
Strong interpersonal and teamwork abilities
Ability to research, collect, and analyze data
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Schedule: 9/80 Monday through Friday /Every other Friday off. Monday through Thursday 9 hours per day, 8 hours per day every other Friday. Start times are no earlier than 6 am and end times are no later than 6 pm.
Hybrid: Metropolitan’s current practice in this position is a hybrid work schedule. This typically includes two days a week in person and the other days remote. This is subject to change dependent on organizational needs. In addition, a telework policy is scheduled for negotiations and once completed and implemented, will provide final direction on the hybrid schedule.
